NYC-based LGBT Reading Group

James Baldwin
James Baldwin

The LGBT Reading Group (originally called the Gay & Lesbian Reading Group), based in New York City, is a discussion organization founded circa 1982, making it one of the longest continually-meeting LGBTQ+ book societies in the US. Everyone is welcome who is interested in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Queer-Plus Literature, and all points of view are appreciated. BEFORE THE PANDEMIC, meetings were held the second Thursday of each month, 8:00pm at the LGBT Community Center (PLEASE CHECK FOR SCHEDULING UPDATES prior to coming for a discussion), 208 West 13th Street, NYC. You may participate or just listen. Bring your friends! Voluntary contribution, for meeting space rental: $5.00.

The entire group votes on the books to discuss, alternating monthly between [quote] “female and male authors.” Anyone may nominate a work by a LGBTQ+-identified writer, or any title with substantial LGBTQ+ content. Titles draw on contemporary and classic works of fiction, non-fiction, drama, and poetry, ranging from Sappho to Shakespeare, Emily Dickinson to James Baldwin, and current writers too. Below are the books discussed since 1997. (There is also a separate group, currently on hiatus, that discusses LGBTQ+ Science Fiction, Fantasy & Suspense Literature.) Remember, WWW can also stand for Whitman, Wilde and Woolf! PLEASE NOTE that this is a record of books discussed by the group in recent years; it is not necessarily a recommendation of any particular titles. If you like, here is a personal list of Recommended LGBTQ+ Books.

LGBT Reading Group Authors

The Reading Group is proud to include, as present or past members, authors Aaron Hamburger, Bev Jafek, and J.L Weinberg.
